Moissanite Jewellery FAQs
Your questions, answered.
Moissanite is silicon carbide, first found in a meteor crater in 1893 by Henri Moissan, hence the name Moissan-ite. It can also be found on Earth but is exceptionally rare. All of today's Moissanite jewellery is lab-created, making it ethical and sustainable. It is an excellent alternative to Diamonds.
Moissanite has a higher refraction index than diamonds, with an index of (2.65–2.69) compared to the lower index score for Diamonds at (2.42). This means it's a more sparkly stone than a diamond.
On the hardness scale, Moissanite is a tough cookie, scoring 9.25 on the Mohs scale. It is not as hard as diamonds, with a score of 10, but all the same, Moissanite is exceptionally hard and excellent for daily wear.
The colour of Moissanite is near colourless, but lesser quality Moissanite can show a yellow or green hue.
Moissanite is far more affordable than natural diamonds and is perfect for those on a small budget.
100% Moissnite is a gemstone in its own right. Though it is known at times as a Diamond alternative, it really should be viewed as another gemstone that happens to look like a Diamond. It has its own unique chemical composition, and even though it is made in a lab, do not confuse it as a synthetic diamond.
Moissanite does not have the same demand or resale value as natural diamonds, but because It is grown in a lab, controlled production can meet supply demands.
Because Moissanite is very durable and resistant to scratching, it is easy to maintain its beauty. To clean, just use warm, soapy water and a soft brush. Like with any gemstone, avoid strong chemicals.
Though white, colourless Moissanite is the most popular, it comes in some fantastic colours, which just add to the choice of Moissanite Jewellery.
To the untrained eye, this is unlikely, but when placed next to a diamond, you will be able to notice a difference. Moissanite does show glimpses of colour and more fire due to its higher refraction index.
Due to its hardness, Moissanite is undoubtedly perfect for everyday wear and a perfect choice for engagement rings.
